Stress Fractures 101

A small hairline fracture is also referred to as a stress fracture. While stress fractures can occur in the pelvis, thigh bones, and shins, they most commonly occur in the lower legs, particularly affecting the bones of the midfoot. Stress fractures may occur in the foot because it is no longer able to bear weight. They are not commonly a result of a specific injury, but they are usually a result of overuse or repetitive motion. Because of this, athletes like runners, soccer players, and dancers are more likely to develop stress fractures. A common sign of a stress fracture is a sharp pain that is felt when bearing weight that will persist overtime or get worse as the fracture also worsens. Those who are experiencing foot pain and believe that they may have a stress fracture should consult with a podiatrist for treatment.

Stress fractures occur when there is a tiny crack within a bone. To learn more, contact one of our podiatrists from Omega Podiatry. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain free and on your feet.

How Are They Caused?

Stress fractures are the result of repetitive force being placed on the bone. Since the lower leg and feet often carry most of the body’s weight, stress fractures are likely to occur in these areas. If you rush into a new exercise, you are more likely to develop a stress fracture since you are starting too much, too soon.  Pain resulting from stress fractures may go unnoticed at first, however it may start to worsen over time.

Risk Factors

  • Gender – They are more commonly found in women compared to men.
  • Foot Problems – People with unusual arches in their feet are more likely to develop stress fractures.
  • Certain Sports – Dancers, gymnasts, tennis players, runners, and basketball players are more likely to develop stress fractures.
  • Lack of Nutrients – A lack of vitamin D and calcium may weaken the bones and make you more prone to stress fractures
  • Weak Bones – Osteoporosis can weaken the bones therefore resulting in stress fractures

Stress fractures do not always heal properly, so it is important that you seek help from a podiatrist if you suspect you may have one. Ignoring your stress fracture may cause it to worsen, and you may develop chronic pain as well as additional fractures.

We Can Treat Your Foot or Ankle Pain

Foot or ankle pain can negatively affect your day-to-day life and can occur due to several different conditions. Pain can also be an indicator of a more serious underlying condition, which is why you should seek professional help as soon as you notice any abnormalities in your feet.

What Conditions Are Treated by a Podiatrist?

Doctors who focus on treating foot and ankle conditions are known as podiatrists, or doctors of podiatric medicine (labeled DPM for short). Conditions that podiatrists commonly diagnose and treat include skin conditions, such as blisters, warts, and corns; nail conditions, like ingrown toenails and fungal infections; and injuries, such as sprains or breaks. Many podiatrists focus on specific areas in foot medicine with specialties that include biomechanics, wound care, and sports medicine. Patients who have underlying health conditions, like obesity, diabetes, arthritis, and poor blood circulation, should also be under the care of a podiatrist. If you have foot pain, swelling, numbness, or a possible infection in your feet or ankles, visiting a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis and treatment method is suggested.

If you are experiencing pain in the feet or ankles, don’t join the stubborn majority refusing treatment. Feel free to contact one of our podiatrists from Omega Podiatry. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is a Podiatrist?

Someone would seek the care of a podiatrist if they have suffered a foot injury or have common foot ailments such as heal spurs, bunions, arch problems, deformities, ingrown toenails, corns, foot and ankle problems, etc.

Podiatric Treatment

A podiatrist will treat the problematic areas of the feet, ankle or lower leg by prescribing the following:

  • Physical therapy
  • Drugs
  • Orthotic inserts or soles
  • Surgery on lower extremity fractures

A common podiatric procedure a podiatrist will use is a scanner or force plate which will allow the podiatrist to know the designs of orthotics. Patients are then told to follow a series of tasks to complete the treatment. The computer will scan the foot a see which areas show weight distribution and pressure points. The podiatrist will read the analysis and then determine which treatment plans are available.

The Three Grades of Ankle Sprains

When the ligaments that connect the bones to each other become overstretched or torn, a sprain can occur. When it comes to ankle sprains, they can be diagnosed as one of 3 different categories. When the ligament is only mildly stretched, this is known as a Grade 1 sprain. Once the ligament is even slightly torn, it is considered a Grade 2 sprain. A Grade 3 ankle sprain can occur when the ligament is completely torn. Common signs of a sprained ankle may include pain, tenderness, bruising, stiffness, and an inability to bear weight. Because the symptoms of a sprain are often similar to that of a fracture, patients who believe that they have sprained their ankle should consult with a podiatrist in order to make sure they do not have any broken bones. A podiatrist will be able to assess the severity of the injury and provide a proper treatment option.

Ankle sprains are common but need immediate attention. If you need your feet checked, contact one of our podiatrists from Omega Podiatry. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

How Does an Ankle Sprain Occur?

Ankle sprains take place when the ligaments in your ankle are torn or stretched beyond their limits. There are multiple ways that the ankle can become injured, including twisting or rolling over onto your ankle, putting undue stress on it, or causing trauma to the ankle itself.

What Are the Symptoms?

  • Mild to moderate bruising
  • Limited mobility
  • Swelling
  • Discoloration of the skin (depending on severity)

Preventing a Sprain

  • Wearing appropriate shoes for the occasion
  • Stretching before exercises and sports
  • Knowing your limits

Treatment of a Sprain

Treatment of a sprain depends on the severity.  Many times, people are told to rest and remain off their feet completely, while others are given an air cast. If the sprain is very severe, surgery may be required.

If you have suffered an ankle sprain previously, you may want to consider additional support such as a brace and regular exercises to strengthen the ankle.

What Are the Different Types of Fractures?

There are many ways to break a bone. Acute fractures occur suddenly and are caused by direct trauma. Stress fractures are small and caused by repetitive damage from overuse. Fractures can be closed or open. In a closed or simple fracture, the skin remains intact. In an open or compound fracture, the bone breaks the surface of the skin. Fractures can further be categorized based on how the bone is broken. A transverse fracture means that the bone is broken in a straight line, while an oblique fracture means that the bone is broken diagonally. A spiral fracture circles around the bone. A comminuted fracture is when the bone breaks into more than one piece. An avulsion fracture is when a ligament or tendon tears and pulls a small piece of bone away with it. If you have broken a bone in your feet or ankles, please seek the care of a podiatrist.

Ankle and foot injuries are common among athletes and in many sports. They can be caused by several problems and may be potentially serious. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Common Injuries

The most common injuries that occur in sporting activities include:

  • Achilles Tendonitis
  • Achilles Tendon Rupture
  • Ankle Sprains
  • Broken Foot
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Stress Fractures
  • Turf Toe

Symptoms

Symptoms vary depending upon the injury and in some cases, there may be no symptoms at all. However, in most cases, some form of symptom is experienced. Pain, aching, burning, bruising, tenderness, tightness or stiffness, sensation loss, difficulty moving, and swelling are the most common symptoms.

Treatment

Just as symptoms vary depending upon the injury, so do treatment options. A common treatment method is known as the RICE method. This method involves rest, applying ice, compression and elevating the afflicted foot or ankle. If the injury appears to be more serious, surgery might be required, such as arthroscopic or reconstructive surgery. Lastly, rehabilitation or therapy might be needed to gain full functionality in the afflicted area. Any discomfort experienced by an athlete must be evaluated by a licensed, reputable medical professional.
